CULINARY ART. - THE LONDON AND COUNTRY COOK [...] by Charles Carter. London, printed for Charles Hitch , Stephen Austen, and John Hinton, 1749. In-8, vii-(one)-363-(one) pp. in tortoiseshell calf, spine ribbed, cloisonné and fleuronné with garnet-red title-piece, decorated edges, red edges; very worn binding with restored top cover (period binding). ORIGINAL EDITION of this work, which details numerous recipes in all areas of the culinary arts: "boiling, roasting, pastry, pickling, jellies, preserving, confectionary, cakes, creams, cordials, syrups, English wines, &c.". It is entirely different from cook Charles Carter's Complete practical book (originally published in London in 1730 and republished several times under a different title), although it is published here under the same author's name and illustrated with the same plates. ILLUSTRATION ENGRAVED ON COPPER outside the text: frontispiece and 49 plates, including 4 fold-outs. Provenance: Scottish diplomat John Carmichael, Earl of Hyndford (bookplate vignette).
