MENDÈS-FRANCE (Pierre). Signed letter to publisher Didier. New York, August 7, 1942. 1/2 p. in-folio. "Dear Sir, in this envelope, I am sending you: 1° a small notice on my book, supplementing the one I sent you previously. In particular, there is an additional paragraph of some interest; 2° a part of the manuscript that you are still missing [in his own handwriting, Pierre Mendès-France had added and then crossed out "will follow under another envelope"]..." IN EXILE IN THE UNITED STATES AFTER HIS ESCAPE. Pierre-Mendès-France left France in 1940 to fight in North Africa, but was arrested, brought back to France and sentenced to prison by the Vichy regime in June 1941. He managed to escape in August 1941 to Switzerland, from where he reached the United States. There, from April to October 1942, he completed his memoirs of the period following the defeat, and published them in New York in January 1943, under the title Liberté, Liberté chérie.
