Inspired by ancient Hindu astrology, according to which the universe is composed of seven planets and two incarnations of the lunar cycle, all considered celestial deities, Indian jewelry uses a combination of nine fine, precious stones and one pearl, each personifying a deity called Nava ratna (nine gems). The sun is placed in the center in the form of a ruby. This arrangement is a symbol of auspiciousness and protection for the wearer. Used as an amulet, the Nava ratna becomes the representation of the universe and the expression of a divine plan for its wearer.
