Jules BARBEY D'AUREVILLY. Les Diaboliques. Paris, Dentu, 1874. In-12, mahogany half-maroquin with corners, smooth spine decorated throughout with a mosaic olive branch in black morocco and Lavallière, gilt head, cover (Carayon). Vicaire, I-305 /// VIII-(1f.)-(1)-8 to 354-(1f.) Partly first edition of Barbey d'Aurevilly's masterpiece. It consists of six short stories, of which only Le Dessous de cartes d'une partie de whist appeared after L'Ensorcelée. This copy includes a portrait by Rajon and the suite drawn and engraved by Félicien Rops, comprising 6 plates for the 6 short stories and 2 plates titled Postface. A very fine copy, well bound by Carayon.
