BOOK OF HOURS. Manuscript on parchment. S.l.n.d. (circa 1500). In-8, Lavallière calf, the covers entirely decorated with a large gilded decoration consisting of a large straight scroll, the middles filled with four large spandrels and a large oval medallion with a gilded background and seeded with gilded flowers, spine with 4 nerves decorated with a repeated fleuron, gilded edges (Binding of the period). Book of hours, probably for the use of Sens. Text mainly in Latin, except for 12 leaves in French (f.166 to f.177). 192f. (out of 196) consisting of 12 calendar leaves and 23 quires of 8 leaves. 115 x 180 mm for the leaves and 70 x 95 mm for the text, 12 lines per page. Gothic lettering in red and brown ink, ruled in red ink. 4 leaves with paintings are missing (f.10, f.16, f.78 and f.107). - f.Ir-f.XIIv : Calendar - f.1-f.3r : Pericope according to Saint John - f3v-f.77r: Hours of the Virgin Mary - f.78r-f.94r: Penitential Psalms - f.94v-f.106v: Litany of the Saints - f.107r-f.166r: Office of the Dead - f.166v-f.177r: Marian prayers in French - f.177r-f.184r: Marian prayers in Latin Decoration : - One large painting on 5 (f.15v) depicting the Crucifixion with illuminations, gold filleting and large floral initial in blue and pink ink with painted florets and white filigree, framed with floral decoration with red, green and blue flowers or fruit, blue and gold acanthus leaves and small gold leaves. - 9 folios with illuminated frames (ff.31r, 45r, 51r, 55v, 59v, 64r, 71v, 166v and 173r), each featuring a large blue and pink initial watermarked in white on a gold background with blue and pink foliage and foliate scrolls, the illuminations with floral decoration with pink, green and red flowers or fruit, gold leaves and blue and gold acanthus leaves. - 172 gold initials with pink and blue colored parts watermarked with white. An initial KL repeated on each calendar leaf and 160 for the text. - Numerous small initials in red and blue watermarked in black or red ink. A handsomely crafted Book of Hours, unfortunately lacking 4 figures, in a beautiful 16th-century binding.
