CHINA Tea bowl and saucer decorated in grisaille and gold with a portrait of Johannes Cocceius and the inscription JOANNES COCCEIUSS. THEOLOGIAE PROFESSOR. IN ACADEMIA LUGDUNENFI". 18th century, Qianlong period (1735-1796). H. 4 cm, D. 11.7 cm. Johannes Cocceius (or Coccejus) (1603-1669), was a Dutch theologian born in Bremen. After studying in Hamburg and at the University of Franeker, where Sixtinus Amama was one of his professors, in 1630 he became professor of biblical philology at the Gymnasium of his native town. In 1636, he was transferred to Franeker, where he held the chair of Hebrew and, from 1643 onwards, the chair of theology, until his death. chair of theology, until 1650, when he succeeded Friedrich Spanheim as professor of theology at Leiden University. His major work is his Lexicon et commentarius sermonis hebraici et chaldaici (Leiden, 1669), which has been frequently republished. His theology is set out in detail in his Summa Doctrinae de Foedere et Testamento Dei (1648). This lot is a temporary import. The buyer must pay import charges of 5.5% (6.6% incl.
