CHINA Large porcelain punch bowl with polychrome famille rose enamel decoration of Masonic symbols: inside in a medallion, the two columns framing a sun adorned in the center with the letter G, the inside rim decorated with a sun, moon, stars and water jets, the outside decorated with compasses, square, beehives and other Masonic attributes. 18th century, Qianlong period (1735-1796), circa 1780-1790. D. 40 cm - H. 16.2 cm. Two 6 cm cracks on the rim. Bibliography : Philadelphians and the China Trade 1784-1844, Philadelphia Museum of Art exhibition catalog, 1984, for a similar bowl inscribed Eckfeldt for John Eckfeldt, from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, John Frederick Lewis Memorial Collection, gift of Mrs. John Frederick Lewis; New York and the China Trade, D.S. Howard, no. C41 for a smaller bowl with this type of decoration whose original owner was Robert L. Livingston (1746-1813) of Clermont, now at the New York Historical Society. This lot is a temporary import. The buyer will have to pay an import fee of 5.5% (6.6% incl. VAT) of the hammer price, in addition to the usual fees.
