SUË (Eugène). 2 signed autograph letters. - Lot 162
SUË (Eugène). 2 signed autograph letters. To a press director. "Sunday, April 15" [1849]. Beautiful, long letter on the polemical publication of one of his works destined for subsequent publication by Maurice Lachâtre, most likely LES MYSTERES DU PEUPLE, which ran afoul of the censors. Eugène Sue recalls his preface, conceived as "a sort of lightning rod", the deletions to be made, the proofs to be received. He also talks about his life of work and bitterness in the mountains. To Auguste Pittaud de Forges. 1852. Beautiful letter on his political feelings, on writing a novel, on the pain of exile, on his narrow dwelling near Annecy, where he invites his correspondent to come and meet him. THE VAUDEVILLISTE AUGUSTE DE FORGES WAS ONE OF EUGENE SUE'S NEAREST FRIENDS SINCE THEIR YOUTH: he made his literary debut with him, and even collaborated on a play in 1829.
