SACHS (Maurice Ettinghausen, known as Maurice). Correspondence of 7 letters to Henry Wibbels HENRY WIBBELS, WHO WAS MAURICE SACHS'S LOVER, was a painter, writer and actor, among other things, and met Maurice Sachs in 1931 when the latter was on a lecture tour of America. An alumnus of Yale University (where he had had an affair with a professor), he followed Maurice Sachs to France, where they lived together until 1938. Henry Wibbels was then employed for a time by the American army, notably in Korea, and married the widow of painter Paul Ullman, Elisabeth Bertron, with whom he settled in California. Autograph letter signed, in English. London, [September 1938]. IMPRESSIONS ON LONDON, ESPECIALLY ON HOMOSEXUAL LIFE; also on his play Les Dettes, which he was seeking to have performed there, on the English translation, auditions to find actors... - Autograph letter signed, in French. Southampton, October 12 [1938]. Beautiful farewell letter to Henry Wibbels, who is returning to America; with advice for directing his private life and acting career: "... Force yourself to be happy. It is a state that is won by force, never by surrender..." (4 pp. in-12, preserved envelope addressed to Henry Wibbels under his pseudonym Michael Wills) - - Autograph letter signed, in English. Paris, [May 25, 1939, according to the postmark]. He announces the dispatch of his book AU TEMPS DU BOEUF-SUR-LE-TOIT, and talks about a novel he hopes to complete. He also announces a trip to Corsica at the invitation of a naval officer, Jean-Guy de Vandière, and his move in with his grandmother Alice Franckel (widow of Jacques Bizet). Says he attended a BAL SOMPTUEUX D'ÉTIENNE DE BEAUMONT (COSTUMES BY BERARD AND SCHIAPARELLI). With a beautiful declaration of loving friendship to Henry Wibbels, accompanied by life advice (6 pp. in-12, with original sketch, envelope retained). - Autograph letter signed, in English. Talks about MARGUERITE YOURCENAR WHO LOANED HIM THE GENJI'S TALE WHICH SHE WANTS TO TRANSLATE; about the success of his book AU TEMPS DU BOEUF-SUR-LE-TOIT; about politics, especially Adolf Hitler; about his trip to Corsica ("... Here's a flower from the Corsican maquis. Smell it...", and gives life advice to Henry Wibbels (4 pp. in-folio, envelope preserved, DRY FLOWER ATTACHED). - Autograph letter signed, in English, to Henry Wibbels. Caen, December 10, 1939. Talks about the planned publication of SABBAT, says his book AU TEMPS DU BOEUF-SUR-LE-TOIT is a success, says he's writing a new novel, talks about the boredom of military life and the stimulation he gets from frequenting university circles in Caen; he also talks about the war and Adolf Hitler (4 pp. in-12, envelope preserved). - Autograph letter signed, in English, to Henry Wibbels. LONG AND SUPERB PASSAGE ON THE EXODUS OF 1940 and Sachs's role in publicizing the situation on the radio to the Americans (he announces that he has just been hired by the U.S.-subsidized state broadcaster Paris-Mondial); he thanks Henry Wibbels for a remittance that saved him from ruin (4 pp. in-12, envelope preserved, ATTACHED, A PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT OF SACHS as interviewer for Paris-mondial, AND THE VESTIGES OF A FLOWER (" ...
