NECKER (Jacques). Letter signed as Director General of Finan - Lot 147
NECKER (Jacques). Letter signed as Director General of Finances, addressed to the Duchess of Villeroy, Jeanne-Louise Constance d'Aumont. Paris, April 29, 1780. One p. folio. "Madame la duchesse, I would like to be able to support your interest in the Dupierry lady, but I cannot give you any hope about the pension you are asking for her. Her husband's services have only been rendered to individuals whom the King has very generously paid, and it would not be fair for His Majesty to take it upon himself to reward the people these individuals have employed; the slightest exception to this would have great consequences, because these kinds of employees are numerous, and they would all ask to enjoy the same grace; However, as sr Dupierry has served for a very long time, and leaves his wife in misfortune, I thought I could grant her an extraordinary relief of one hundred pistoles, which she is still unaware of, and of which I beg you, Madame la duchesse, to inform her. At the same time, please inform her that this is the last help she should expect from the administration..." ATTACHED: NECKER (Suzanne Curchod, Madame). 4 signed letters, one with autograph corrections. 2 to M. Dupierry (s.d.) and 2 to his widow, concerning requests for financial pardons. The daughter of a pastor and wife of Jacques Necker, Suzanne Curchod received a meticulous education in science, modern languages and ancient languages, and ran a salon in Paris open to philosophers and encyclopedists.
