MONTHERLANT (Henry de). Set of 20 pieces. - Lot 143
MONTHERLANT (Henry de). Set of 20 pieces. 8 autograph letters signed to the director of the Revue de Paris, Marcel Thiébaut. 1924-1955 and n.d. On his works LES OLYMPIQUES (1924), CELLES QU'ON PREND DANS SES BRAS (December 9, 1950, "I could only be... grateful that you write that its epilogue is 'human', whereas, by some mystery of blindness, some critics write of my male character that he is 'inhuman'..."), PORT-ROYAL (January 12, 1955, "... It seems to me that your shortcut - totalitarian power versus individual freedom - corresponds roughly to reality..."), CARNETS (May 4, 1955), etc. - Autograph letter signed and autograph message on a visiting card [to Jane Catulle-Mendès]. Paris, 1925. "Concerning his forthcoming departure for "happy Andalusia", the publication in Comoedia of his book LES BESTIAIRES, and the death of his correspondent's son at the Front in 1917: "... I will be charmed to have your books in which the memory of your son is evoked, and even more touched than charmed. Youth, poetry and the only great sacrifice, alas! Bou-Saada in Algeria, 1928: "All his heartfelt thanks and respectful tributes." - 2 autograph letters signed to Louis Brun, literary director of Editions Grasset. 1933. Concerning the reissue of the original part of La Relève du matin: "... I would like to point out right away that the corrections made to LA RELEVE are very numerous... This book being in a deplorable state, I would rather not see it appear than to see it appear in its present form. I therefore believe that there will be nothing to keep of the old one, as you see...". - Autograph letter signed to New York publisher Blanche Knopf. 1938. "Madame Marie Scheikévitch (Mme Carolus-Duran) whom you surely know, at least by reputation, who is a painter and writer, with strength and wit, who helped Proust in his early days, who has written about him, who succeeds in everything she wants, and enchants everything she does, sends you this article about me, which would surely make a very good impression in the New York press..." - 4 autograph letters and cards signed to Marie Scheikévitch. 1938-1943 and n.d. "... England, where twenty times I should have gone; but I've always put it off, frightened by the need there for an author, it seems, to see the right people. And THE RIGHT PEOPLE, WITH FEW EXCEPTIONS, MAKE ME SICK. But here you are, dear Madame, feeding this vanity without upsetting my precious equilibrium! You're like those goddesses in Homer, who fought in the warrior's place, letting him believe that it was he who had won the victory..." (s.d.). - Autograph letter signed to writer and actor Jean Claudio. 1951. About a collection of poems by his correspondent, probably Les Fausses joies, and about a Jacques Hébertot tour with Montherlant's play FILS DE PERSONNE. Attached are a few items concerning Jean Claudio. - Autograph letter signed TO ROGER NIMIER. 1954. Beautiful letter about La Rose des sables and his correspondent's review of it. - Typescript with additions and corrections by several hands, including one autograph, of his article "UNE JUSTIFICATION DE PORT-ROYAL" (12 ff. in-folio). Article published on March 1, 1955 in the Revue de Paris, as part of the controversy surrounding his play Port-Royal, premiered at the Comédie-Française on December 8, 1954.
