HUYSMANS (Joris-Karl). Correspondence of 3 autograph letters - Lot 130
HUYSMANS (Joris-Karl). Correspondence of 3 autograph letters signed to Lucien Descaves.
Ligugé, February 7, 1901. On the forthcoming printing of his book SAINTE LYDWINE DE SCHIEDAM ("... The manuscript is ready for delivery!..."), on publishing strategies ("... Since my disastrous attempt at EN RADE, I've been afraid of novels in magazines, and think that newspapers are more likely to launch them. It's true that En rade was hardly made for the public..."), about the newspaper L'Écho, which he criticizes, about his friends Leclaire, the dedicatees of Sainte Lydwine de Schiedham, and about his bookbinder Moralès, whose delays he criticizes and to whom he does not want to hand over his book on Saint-Séverin for the time being. - Ligugé, April 17, 1901. On his troubles with his maid, on his orders to his bookbinder Moralès, on his work to complete SAINTE LYDWINE DE SCHIEDAM, on the neurasthenia of the poet LOUIS LE CARDONNEL (" ... It is true that when he reads a bit of MALLARME, he is rejuvenated for a few seconds..."), money matters relating to the FONDATION DE L'ACADEMIE GONCOURT (of which he was president), and the role in this of LEON HENNIQUE and Princess Mathilde. - Lourdes, March 13, 1903. Concerning L'ACADEMIE GONCOURT, of which he was president, on the pleasure of being in Lourdes, his friends the Leclaires, his "messy work" on L'OBLAT, and the stupidity of the critic Gaston Deschamps.
HUYSMANS' MOST FRIENDLY WRITER LUCIEN DESCAVES (1861-1949) was also a close friend of Zola, Goncourt and Alphonse Daudet, and became famous for the lawsuit brought against his anti-militarist novel Sous-offs (1889) by the Ministry of War. He had been noticed as early as 1882 by Huysmans, who wrote of him in 1889: "In a literature without transport, terribly steel and clean, he has asserted himself as a scrupulous and tenacious artist, morose and intimate, rough and honest". Descaves was appointed executor by Huysmans, and carried out his task scrupulously, for example by publishing an edition of his OEuvres complètes.
ATTACHED: BONNEFON (Jean de). Autograph letter signed to Joris-Karl Huysmans. "This Friday, March 13th" [1903]. Dithyrambic praise for L'Oblat, despite differences of opinion, and proposal to publish this work in his review L'Art et l'autel.
