The Comte de Mirabeau here proposes that the National Assembly declare a three-day mourning period following the death of Benjamin Franklin, "the genius who freed America & poured torrents of light over Europe", "the wise man that two worlds claim for themselves, the man disputed by the history of science & the history of empires", a "hero of humanity", "one of the greatest men ever to serve philosophy & liberty", etc.
