JOLY DE SAINT-VALIER (Nicolas). Histoire raisonnée des opéra - Lot 38
JOLY DE SAINT-VALIER (Nicolas). In-8, xii-235-(1) pp, fawn calf, smooth spine cloisonné and decorated with gilt pomegranate irons with garnet title-piece, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, filleted edges, red edges, binding a little rubbed with worn edges (period binding).
FIRST EDITION. Without the extremely rare supplement of 10 pp.
LIEUTENANT-COLONEL, FORMER PREVOT GENERAL DES MARECHAUSSEES DE BOURGOGNE, NICOLAS JOLY DE SAINT-VALIER seems to have had a difficult character and a tendency to regularly solicit the authorities to communicate military memoirs, or to beg for places and favors. He seems to have gone over to the service of England in reaction, he wrote, to cabals waged against him at Versailles, and then to have fallen out with his English protector. He published several books on the American War of Independence, as well as works on education and Voltaire.
