Large in-8, (8 including the 3rd blank)-608 pp. including 3 pp. with notated music, garnet half-chagrin, ribbed spine cloisonné and fleuronné, red chagrined percaline boards framed with cold scroll filleting, gilt edges; binding slightly rubbed, some freckling, sometimes heavy (period binding). Originally published in 1860. An important source on Indian customs and the archaeological remains of Texas and other southern border states. BEAUTIFUL WOOD ENGRAVED ILLUSTRATION: 40 out-of-text wood-engraved plates, including: 16 landscapes (in black on two-tone blue and bistre backgrounds), 9 compositions of objects (two-tone, i.e. 4 in red, 4 in green, and one in black and bistre), and 15 portraits (in black on bistre background).
