CHEVALIER (Michel). Lettres sur l'Amérique du Nord. Paris, l - Lot 19
CHEVALIER (Michel). Lettres sur l'Amérique du Nord. Paris, librairie de Charles Gosselin et Cie, 1836. 2 volumes in-8, (4 of which the last is blank)-xv-(one blank)-470-(2) + (4 of which the last is blank)-527-(1) pp. stapled; some foxing, sometimes heavy. FIRST EDITION. Off-text lithographed fold-out map with some color highlights. A WORK INSPIRED BY THE STAY HE TAKEN IN AMERICA FROM 1833 TO 1835 (United States, Mexico, Cuba), and which met with success at the time at least equal to Tocqueville's De la Démocratie en Amérique, published by the same publisher. Michel Chevalier's vision of America's approaching domination is remarkably clear-sighted. ONE OF THE GREATEST FRENCH ECONOMISTS OF THE 19th CENTURY, MICHEL CHEVALIER (1806-1879) was initially a convinced follower of Saint-Simonism. He went on to become an ardent supporter of free trade, and together with Richard Cobden helped to sign the free trade treaty between France and England (1860). Provenance: Scipion de Chapelain (ex-libris printed vignettes).
