BRISTED (John).
Paris, chez Alexis Eymery, 1826. 2 volumes in-8, [of which the first 9 are numbered i to ix]-380 + 320 pp, half-havana calf, smooth threaded spines with black titles and tombs, marbled edges; spines a little spotted, a few stained leaves in the second volume (period binding). FIRST EDITION OF THE FRENCH TRANSLATION of this treatise originally published in English in New York in 1818 under the title The Resources of the United States of America [...] - a reprint the same year in London bore the title America and her resources [...]. A highly informed work, with in-depth analyses, written in a spirit favorable to the United States, even if John Bristed acknowledges the country's shortcomings, such as the presence of slavery and a less-developed intellectual life than in Europe. He is convinced that the future belongs to this young nation, particularly in the face of England, but develops his comparison in a balanced way: the Earl of Liverpool, Prime Minister of England (and former Secretary of State for War in 1812 during the conflict with the United States) recommended its reading to members of his cabinet. A GENDRE OF THE RICHISSIAN JOHN JACOB ASTOR, JOHN BRISTED (1778-1855) was of English origin: settled in the United States in 1806, he first practiced law in New York, then became an Anglican clergyman in Bristol (Rhode Island). He made a name for himself as a writer and essayist.
