BAZON DE BAULENS (Jean de). Apostrophe to the English on pre - Lot 8
BAZON DE BAULENS (Jean de). Apostrophe to the English on present affairs [...]. Heroic poem. À Agen, de l'imprimerie de la veuve J. Noubel, 1781. In-8, 63-(one blank) pp. brown basane, smooth spine, cloisonné and decorated with gilt pomegranate irons with green title-piece, double gilt fillet framing the boards, ornate coupes, gilt edges; binding a little worn and slightly stained (period binding). ORIGINAL EDITION, in rare Agen printing. ANTI-ENGLISH POETIC DIATRIBE PUBLISHED AT THE HEIGHT OF THE UNITED STATES WAR OF INDEPENDENCE. A distant relative of Montesquieu, the author served as a captain in the Royal Artillery. Here, he extols the military merits of the French Royal Navy as opposed to that of the English. This verse piece, which includes a maritime anecdote about the Marquis de La Fayette, would see a second, revised edition the following year, under the title L'Héroïsme français dans la Marine, ou parallèle des Français et des Anglais sur les affaires présentes (from the same presses, under the false address of London).
