Theater or opera binoculars in gilded brass and mother-of-pearl. With removable arm. Signed "LEMAIRE Fi, Paris". 19th c. H. 5.6 cm; L. 9.7 cm (Some wear) The inlays on this pair of theater binoculars appear to be made from parts and fragments of Mother-of-Pearl (Pinctada margaritifera) and Great Mother-of-Pearl (Pinna nobilis). The mother-of-pearl species Pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera) is not subject to regulation under the Washington Convention, European Community Regulation 338/97 of 09/12/1996, or the French Environment Code. The Grande nacre species (Pinna nobilis) is not subject to regulation under the Washington Convention, European Community Regulation 338/97 of 09/12/1996, and predates the application of the AM of 20/12/2004 of the French Environment Code relating to marine fauna.
