RELIURE siècle. In-8, red morocco, large floral frame with small irons on the boards, 5-nerve ornate spine, interior roulette, gilt edges. Attractive binding decorated with small irons. On a mid-18th-century manuscript bearing the following title on the first leaf: OEuvres diverses / de / Pe HILLAIRE / né à Honfleur en 1736 le 14 avril / et mort à Guignes Rabutin le 15 aoust / 1763. 3 introductory leaves for Hillaire's biography, 80 leaves of epistles and miscellaneous poetry and 92 blank leaves. Pierre Hillaire, from a modest background, was destined for the Ponts et Chaussées, while at the same time teasing poetry. He left (sic) to make his rounds and died en route at an inn in Guignes Rabutin... of smallpox.
