Earthenware plate with contoured rim featuring a patriotic polychrome design, with a peasant in the center holding a banner bearing the inscription 'vivre libre ou mourir' ('live free or die').
This motto was used by the Friends of the Constitution at the start of the Revolution, and became very popular from 1790 onwards. It was used in a variety of media and was found on earthenware until 1793.
Late 18th century, Revolutionary period.
