Earthenware rim plate with polychrome patriotic decoration of three Phrygian bonnets, the center one resting on the head of a spade, at the base on a scroll the inscription "Bonet de la liberté" on the wing, a radiant sun.
This is a rare design in which the bonnet of liberty alone supports the spade of the Third Estate, the other Orders having disappeared.
The Phrygian bonnet was originally red, with a cockade, whereas the liberty bonnet is that of the galley slaves, with no cockade. This is the one chosen by the faience makers for this piece.
Late 18th century, revolutionary period.
D. 22.5 cm
Chipping.
