Earthenware rimmed plate with rare patriotic polychrome decoration depicting the tent erected on the Champ-de-Mars for the Fête de la Fédération on July 14, 1790, with two small sentry boxes on either side.
The decor is reminiscent of the grandstands erected to protect a privileged few in Paris from the elements in front of the royal military school, as depicted in contemporary prints.
1500 workers and countless volunteers from all walks of life were mobilized to prepare the festivities, including the royal family and the court.
This decoration was not widely distributed at the time, and remains rare.
Late 18th century, revolutionary period.
D. 23 cm
