Earthenware plate with contoured rim featuring patriotic polychrome decoration in the center of a rooster perched on a cannon surmounted by the inscription 'je veille pour la nation' ('I watch for the nation').
The iconography of the rooster predates the French Revolution, but was revived in 1790 and popularized around 1792-1793. Its symbolism is twofold: it can be linked to warrior divinities, but also to a protective role.
Late 18th century, revolutionary period.
