JAPAN - MEIJI period (1868 - 1912) Three-square Saya inro, polylobed saya in kinji lacquer and gyobu nashiji and inlaid with mother-of-pearl, coral and tortoiseshell shibayama of a bird and a goose flying among peonies above a stream, mountains in the distance on one side, sentoku taka zogan inlay on the other, suaka and gilded copper of a man trying to escape from a ghost emerging from a box and grabbing him by his garment, while a kappa holds him by the neck, and a huge pigeon frightens him, the sides adorned with stylized flower and bird motifs and surrounded by inlaid shibuichi thread. Signed in a shibucihi cartouche Nemoto zo. The inro inside in togidashi lacquer and kinji and hirame lacquer, decorated with swastika, kikko, asanoha, hishi, peony and geometric motifs.
