CHINA - JIAQING period (1796 - 1820) Fan in gilded paper and ivory strands, painted in ink and colors depicting pink peonies. At top right, a poem by Emperor Jiaqing calligraphed and painted by HUANG Yue (1750-1841): For thousands of years, peonies have bloomed in the homes of the rich and famous; The leaves are shades of green; The flowers are different shades of red; A true imperial flower. The thirteen tinted ivory strands carved with peaches and pomegranates in their foliage, bats fluttering around.
