In-8, tortoiseshell calf, smooth spine cloisonné and fleuronné decorated with gilt Masonic motifs with brown title page, boards framed in triple gilt fillet with corner fleurons and Masonic motifs at spandrels and center, filleted edges, marbled edges (period binding). xvi-149-(3 of which the last is blank) pp; top cover and upper corners restored, one bit dented, epidermis on second board. ORIGINAL EDITION OF THIS WORK, sometimes attributed to Karl-Friedrich Köppen (according to Wolfstieg, no. 29989), sometimes considered to be merely updated intellectually by him (according to Le Forestier), the translator being the Chevalier de Bérage (according to Fesch, col. nos. 157-158). Tuileur concerning 7 high grades: Parfait Maçon Élu, Élu de P., Élu des Quinze, Petit Architecte, Grand Architecte, Chevalier de l'Épée et de Rose-Croix, Noachite or Prussian Knight. The History of the Noachites, or Prussian Knights (pp. 143-146), on the other hand, is generally attributed to Karl-Friedrich Köppen. 2 folding copper-engraved plates and 3 woodcut vignettes in the text. HANDSOME BINDING WITH MASONIC MOTIFS. Provenance: old handwritten bookplate "Rart [?]" modified to "Gerais [?]" on the title page. - Businessman and politician Maurice Burrus (1882-1959).
