LIRE MAÇONNE (LA), ou Recueil de chansons des Francs-Maçons. À La Haye, chez R. van Laak, 1775. In-12, tortoiseshell calf, spine with cloisonné and fleuronné nerves, gilded frieze of plant and geometric motifs framing the covers with fleurons in the spandrels, gilded mention "LA BIEN AIMEE" in the center of the first cover, gilded edges in part antiqué (period binding). 40-516 pp.; title printed in red and black; notated music printed in the text, in one or two voices; headpieces and corners restored, wetness on the leaves of the first third of the volume. Collection of songs in French and, in some cases, Dutch, compiled and partly written by two Freemasons, Jean-Joseph Joniot dit de VIGNOLES, former canon regular in charge of controlling foreign Obediences for the Grand Lodge of England, and Isaac DU BOIS (author of a double Dutch and French translation of James Anderson's Constitutions). This Lire maçonne had originally appeared in 1763, was the subject of a supplement in 1765, and was republished in 1766 with increases partly taken from the supplement. The present edition reproduces the 1766 edition with a few variants. Copy signed by the publisher. Copper-engraved vignette to the title, signed "Frère Boily". PROVENANCE: LOGE LA BIEN AIMEE D'AMSTERDAM (gilt bookplate on front cover); Alexander Meyrick Broadley (1847-1916, library vignette from his estate The Knapp in Bradpole, Dorset).
