PENDULES. - Collection of lithographs. 1830 and s.d. In-foli - Lot 17
PENDULES. - Collection of lithographs. 1830 and s.d. In-folio, worn cloth (period binding). 92 lithographed plates, of appreciably different formats, most double-page and the largest folded, all mounted on tabs; numbering incomplete in ink; a few lower parts missing, a few tears, some restored with adhesive tape on verso. SUITE DE MODELES DE PENDULES (88 plates), with some models of chandeliers (2 plates), candelabras and coat hooks (2 plates). At least two of these clocks have been made and have appeared in recent auctions, one representing Achilles, the other Tsar Peter the Great. A CATALOG FOR COMMERCIAL USE, PROBABLY UNIQUE, FOR A FOUNDRY SCULPTOR. Works that inspired the artists are sometimes indicated in the lithographs: a bronze preserved in the Tuileries or a painting by Achille-Etna Michallon from the collection of Louis-Philippe I. A few details have been added in pencil: price, size, "choice of base", etc. Several artists were employed, some plates being signed in the lithograph. One of them, Ferdinand Malenfant, is best known for his models for bronze manufacturers and for having applied for a printer's-lithographer's patent so that the clock models he designed could be executed before his eyes (he practiced this profession from 1835 to 1855). Other signatures include Jules Paullet, Jacquet and "Ai". These prints were printed by different printer-lithographers: Godefroy Engelmann, Étienne Ardit, Joséphine-Clémence Formentin, Charlotte-Joséphine Sohier ("rue du Petit-Carreau, n. 19"), Victor Ratier and Jean Ligny.
