LA FONTAINE (Jean de). Les Amours de Psyché et de Cupidon, s - Lot 11
LA FONTAINE (Jean de). Les Amours de Psyché et de Cupidon, suivies d'Adonis, poëme. In Paris, printed in the Louvre by P. Didot Aîné, year V-1797. Large in-4, red morocco, double ribbed spine cloisonné and decorated with vegetal motifs of pampers and others on thousand-point backgrounds bordered by accolades, boards decorated with a gilded frieze of geometric and vegetal motifs, antique vases and curved and straight fillets, ornate coupes, inner gilded roulette, blue tabis linings with gilded roulette framing, same tabis endpapers, gilded edges (rel. p. Bozérian). xx-335-(one blank) pp; binding a little rubbed with worn corners; spotting in upper margins, more marked on plate leaves, foxing. - Cohen (col. 584) also indicates 2 unnumbered leaves, one at the head and the other at the end of the volume, which must have been endpapers; Monglond, vol. IV, col. 151, does not. Beautiful edition printed on wove paper. ILLUSTRATION ENGRAVED ON COPPER ACCORDING TO FRANÇOIS GERARD: 5 plates outside the text, printed before the letter as is almost always the case. In the same spirit, always delicate in his depiction of juvenile love, François Gérard exhibited his famous Psyché et l'Amour at the Salon of Year IV (1798). $$$NB: Ray, n° 69, p. 121; Cohen indicates a head and end sheet that no one else mentions.
