The underside and external contours of this snuffbox are made from actual Proboscidian ivory, and more specifically from Elephantidae. Indeed, Elephantidae ivory recognition parameters are clearly visible in the form of guilloches typical of this family. The original appearance of the raw ivory material has been modified by polishing. A beautiful antique patina characterizes this ivory.
Some of the snuffbox's internal inlays reveal the parameters used to identify the horn of a domestic Bovidae species known as the Domestic Cow (Bos taurus domesticus). The horn parts and fragments have been artificially colored to imitate tortoiseshell.
Some of the internal inlays on this snuffbox are made from parts and fragments of old Cheloniidae spp scales, in view of the manufacture, polishing, assembly and scale parts and fragments. Parameters specific to the recognition of Cheloniidae spp. scales (modified dander) are well characterized.
