These bronze groups are based on sculptures executed in Carrara marble by Antoine Coysevox in 1698, commissioned by Jules Hardouin-Mansart to adorn the Bassin de l'Abreuvoir in the Parc de Marly. Now in the Musée du Louvre (Inv.MR1822 and MR1824), the two marble groups form an allegory, La Renommée du Roi, in the tradition and iconography of Mansart and Lebrun's major commissions for the royal estates of Versailles and Marly. Designed by Coysevox, it was intended to celebrate the prosperity of the kingdom following the signing of the Peace of Ryswick in 1697. Renommée and Mercure illustrate the King's glory, showing him to be alternately warlike and peaceful; his victories are illustrated by the trophies of arms trodden by Pegasus' hooves.
