Claude-François MENESTRIER. Histoire du Roy Louis Le Grand, - Lot 26
Claude-François MENESTRIER. Histoire du Roy Louis Le Grand, Par les Médailles, Emblêmes, Devises, jettons, Inscriptions, Armoiries et autres Monuments publics Paris, Nolin, 1691. In-4, brown half-basin with corners, 5-rib spine (Hélène Level). Saffroy, I-2195 /// 64 plates or leaves. Without the last blank leaf. Saffroy believes this counterfeit to have come off the presses in Holland. It would be similar to the one printed in Amsterdam by Mortier. It was copied from the original published by Nolin in 1689. The work consists of an engraved title, 2 printed leaves, 39 leaves with medals on the recto and explanatory text on the verso, 20 allegorical plates or coats of arms and 2 folding plates, one for the Emblems and mottoes on what the king has done for religion, the other offering a large Veue de la place des Victoires. This forgery contains 5 plates of medals not found in the original. These 5 plates, which are not to the glory of Louis XIV, are true political caricatures. They are preceded by a text stating that Les cinq planches des médailles qui suivent ne sont pas moins curieuses à l'Histoire de Louis Le Grand que les précédentes: mais le Père Menestrier a eu ses veuës pour ne les insérer pas dans cet ouvrage. That's all there is to it!
