Antoine GODEAU. Paraphrase sur les épistres de St. Paul aux - Lot 17
Antoine GODEAU. Paraphrase sur les épistres de St. Paul aux corinthiens, Galates, et éphéziens. Paris, Toussainct Du Bray, 1632. In-4, marbled basane, spine with 5 ornate nerves (pastiche binding). Hoefer, XX-885 /// (36f.)-167-(8f.)-115-(6f.)-68-(6f.)-68. First edition not listed in bibliographies. Brunet makes no reference to it and Hoefer gives the first in 1641. The author first devoted himself to poetry and frequented the Hôtel de Rambouillet, where he was nicknamed Princess Julie's dwarf (mademoiselle de Rambouillet) on account of his gallantry and small stature. Back in the grace of Richelieu for dedicating a work to him, he embraced the ecclesiastical state and was appointed bishop of Grasse. From then on, he was the author of numerous religious works, which earned him membership of the Académie française. A fine unsigned engraved title. 2 leaves restored.
