Claude-François MENESTRIER. Histoire du Roy Louis Le Grand, - Lot 92
Claude-François MENESTRIER. Histoire du Roy Louis Le Grand, Par les Médailles, Emblêmes, Devises, jettons, Inscriptions, Armoiries et autres Monuments publics Paris, Nolin, 1691. In-4, half brown basane with corners, spine with 5 nerves (Hélène Level). Saffroy, I-2195 /// 64 plates or leaves. Without the last blank leaf. Without affirming it completely, Saffroy thinks that this counterfeit came out of the Dutch presses. It would be similar to the one printed in Amsterdam by Mortier. It was copied on the original published by Nolin in 1689. The work consists of an engraved title, 2 printed leaves, 39 leaves with medals on the front and explanatory text on the back, 20 allegorical plates or coats of arms and 2 folding plates, one for the Emblems and mottos on what the king did for religion, the other offering a large Veue de la place des Victoires. This forgery contains 5 plates of medals that are not in the original. These 5 plates which are not to the glory of Louis XIV are real political caricatures. They are preceded by a text indicating that The five plates of medals which follow are not less curious to the History of Louis the Great than the preceding ones: but Father Menestrier had his veuës for not having inserted them in this work. All is said!
