Antoine GODEAU. Paraphrase on the epistles of St. Paul to th - Lot 70
Antoine GODEAU. Paraphrase on the epistles of St. Paul to the Corinthians, Galatians, and Ephesians. Paris, Toussainct Du Bray, 1632. In-4, marbled basane, spine with 5 ornate nerves (pastiche binding). Hoefer, XX-885 /// (36f.)-167-(8f.)-115-(6f.)-68-(6f.)-68. First edition not listed in the bibliographies. Brunet does not refer to it and Hoefer gives the first one in 1641. The author first devoted himself to poetry and frequented the Hôtel de Rambouillet where he was nicknamed the dwarf of the princess Julie (mademoiselle de Rambouillet) because of his gallantry and his small size. Back in grace with Richelieu for having dedicated a work to him, he embraced the ecclesiastical state and was named bishop of Grasse. He was from then on the author of numerous religious works which earned him membership in the French Academy. A beautiful unsigned engraved title. 2 leaves restored.
