Vittoria COLONNA. Le Rime spirituali della illustrissima sig - Lot 57
Vittoria COLONNA. Le Rime spirituali della illustrissima signora Vittoria Colonna Marchesana of Pescara. Venice, Vincenzo Valgrisi, 1548. Small in-4, havana calf, the boards entirely covered with an interlacing decoration with gilt fillets and azure irons, some parts painted or covered with wax in white, red, turquoise, black and brown colors, smooth spine decorated with a foliate stem, edges painted in alternating red and black bands punctuated with the same (Later pastiche binding). Brunet, II-161 / Hoefer, XI-299 /// 120. Beautiful edition which contains poems that were not reproduced in the 1558 edition. It seems to be the most complete edition, all the previous ones having always received increases since the first publication in Parma in 1538. A fine copy of this collection of poems by one of the glories of Italian poetry, Vittoria Colonna (1490-1547), who sang the praises of her husband, Ferdinand-François d'Avalos, Marquis of Pescaire, who died of wounds received at the battle of Pavia, as well as sacred poems. The decoration of the very curious binding that covers this volume was executed later, perhaps in the 18th century. It is made in imitation of the Italian painted bindings of the 16th century. The copy comes from the library of Paul Eudel, whose bookplate is on the first flyleaf. Hinges a little chipped.
