BULL OF ABSOLUTION - Lot 17
BULL OF ABSOLUTION Alexander Farnese PAUL III (1468-1549) pope from 13 October 1534 to 10 November 1549. Bull of absolution in the name of Paul III in December 1541. 1 p. gd in-folio oblong (53 x 33,4 cm). Bull (seal) and gold and red cords. Paul III gives his apostolic blessing to "Gérard Lescuyer, Canon of the diocese of Verdun. Because of the nobility of his birth, the honesty of his life and all the other praises of his merits whose faithful testimony has reached him [] " the pope, in response to these affirmations, decides to lift his excommunication and all the religious prohibitions that followed and also decides to absolve him. He gave him the right to "enjoy the revenues attached to the ecclesiastical benefits that come from the parishes (secular benefits), or abbeys (regular benefits) of the order of Cluny, Cîteaux, Grandmont, Prémontrés, Grammont and Fontevraud []. He recommends that he not commit fraud and not be negligent in the benefits which have charge of souls. He wishes that no one be "[...] permitted to violate this Bull of absolution and dispensation. To violate it would be unworthy of Almighty God and of his apostles Peter and Paul. Given at St. Peter's in Rome, in the year of the incarnation of the Lord 1541, in the octave of the calends of December, the eighth year of his pontificate." Provenance: Former House of Guillaumont, Alain de Grollée-Virville successor.
