Burgundian school, second half of the 15th century - Lot 125
Burgundian school, second half of the 15th century Virgin and Saint John of Calvary Pair of sculptures in the round in polychromed oak Saint John : H. 53 cm - Virgin : H. 50 cm Small accidents and wormholes (John's hair, Virgin's hands, drapery borders), partial stripping of the polychromy This Virgin and Saint John originally framed a Christ on the cross, forming a scene of the Crucifixion of Christ. These two wooden figures show all the characteristics (physiognomy and treatment of the drapery) of the Burgundian style that spread following the image-maker in the service of Philip the Bold, Claus Sluter (1355-1406) and his successors Claus de Werve (1380-1439), Jean de la Huerta (1413-c. 1462) and Antoine le Moiturier (1425-1497). The mournful attitudes and costumes of the two protagonists show above all the profound influence of the procession of mourners that adorned the tombs of the dukes, which became a source of inspiration for other subjects of Burgundian art than funerary art.
